Open Call: My Internet Self

Attention All Creative Individuals:

New York City and San Francisco-based art collective, The Lowbrow Society for The Arts, is holding an open call for submissions to our next project, “My Internet Self”.

Participants will explore the differences between their online persona and how they present themselves in real life.

The internet allows us a certain amount of anonymity, putting the user in control of how we are viewed by others, and allows us to speak our mind without having to deal directly with the consequences of our actions.
How do others view you online?
How is this different than people in your day to day life?
How has the fantasy character that we present, taken on a life of its own?

The final product will include a limited edition printed book along with a NYC gallery show to exhibit the books and original art.
Here’s your chance to be part of the NYC art scene (whether or not you consider yourself an artist)!

  • Submission deadline is January 15, 2011
  • Each participant is allowed up to six 8.5″ x 7″ pages
    (including 1 cover page).
  • Submissions must be 8.5″x 7″ (legal size paper folded in half), 300dpi PDF files.
  • Please format your submissions to these specifications;
.jpg, .indd and .eps files will not be accepted.
  • All media that can take to the printed form is accepted: art, writing, cocktail napkins, movie scores, origami, etc.
  • Multiple submissions are allowed. Split internet personalities? Send them all!
  • Preference will be given to submissions including all six pages,
but exceptions will be made for standout work.

Any and all content is allowed, as are anonymous submissions.
All contributors will receive credit (unless stated they wish to remain anonymous) and a copy of the final project.

For submissions/questions or to learn more about our collective
and get involved, email: LowbrowSociety AT Gmail DOT com

NYC Events: May

Well, hello there!
Long time, no Lowbrow!

So, we’re finally rubbing our eyes and coming out of winter hibernation, and we have a lot of wonderful things in store for you!

First things, first:

Congratulations to Gwynn Galitzer, winner of the SVA 2010 Rhodes Family Award
and the 2010 Fine Arts Thesis Grant for her Senior Thesis project We Love You New York, But There Are Some Things That Need Fixing ! The show featured three of her whimsical, handcrafted costumes and a short film of her creations in current day NYC, juxtaposed with footage of a grimier New York from her youth. You can see (and purchase!) polaroids from her show here, and you can watch the film The White Queen, here, if you missed it. Congratulations, Gwynn!

Now, here’s what we’re up to this month:

Desire: A Group Art Exhibition
Saturday, May 22nd, 2010 // 11am-7pm
The Chelsea Hotel, Suite 1024
222 West 23rd St.

Curator Laura Sheedy, brings together a wildly talented and eclectic group of artists to give their unique and thought provoking perspectives on desire. We will converge upon a swanky red suite in the Chelsea Hotel and transform it into a luscious rich jungle of art. Expect to be moved, dazzled, inspired, and in awe by what they present to you at this show. The work will be informed by their unique and diverse set of influences and backgrounds spanning taxidermy, sculpture, fashion, film, architecture, photography, installation, performance art, and graphic design.

Artists include Lowbrow Society’s Lenora Jayne, and quite a few our creative collaborators, including our favorite sequined seamstress (and sculptress!) Tara McManus, as well as costumer/curator, Laura Sheedy, who you may remember from her sexy leg skirt at MOVE!

SF: Ho-down Blog Roll!

Courtney, my co-curator, as well as another lovely visitor to Urban Ho-Down wrote some nice words about us on the interweb.

Courtney “Fruit Fly” Nichols (The Eye that Writes)

Becky Pederson (The Tuna Slot/ Broke Ass Stuart)

My favorite quote?

“These exhibitions are so much better than your average art show: they’re loud, drunk, colorful, and the people in attendance aren’t all graduates from MICA with a degree in basket weaving.”
